Having said the above, I'm glad I bought the original 2002ish version, "The Sixteen: The Covert Assassination Squad that went Beyond the SAS" because it has a DIFFERENT PREFACE revealing:

a. Why John wrote the book--the U.S. is making its same Vietnam war mistakes again--not sure units like his now exist in the U.K.--military reform excellence is needed

b. John doesn't know who created the Sixteen

c. The weak U.K. counter-intelligence that allowed the Cambridge Soviet Mole spy theft context which created the unit

d. The need for non-attributable direct actions like removing evil dictators like Nasser from power

The new edition's preface narrowly focuses on the need for Special Operators to have the PRO-TECT close combat system and then jumps into the autobiographical action.
