The following to gain mental situational awareness by maps is TEDIOUS--but hey! this is what we mean when we say we must have STOICAL CHARACTER!

MAP RECON

Sample USGS Topo Map

1. Figure out your street location

2. Place it in the USGS web store and select the latest TOPOgraphical map all around it. 1:24, 000 scale is better than 1:62, 000 scale because it offers more useful foot movement-pace, technotactical details.  

Download as a PDF file. 

You now have an electronic, digital TOPO map capability in an USB stick/flash drive that could be read by your desktop or laptop computer; the latter by usually 11.1 volts battery power. 

3. Order a paper map version $15 plus $5 S/H sent to your home.

4. Heat laminate your Home Defensive area TOPO map at say FedEX office or Ranger Joe's.

IF your USGS map doesn't hae UTM/MGRS grid lines but blue tick marks you'll have to carefully draw them in by precise mechanical pencil or pen BEFORE laminating or AFTER laminating using very fine point alcohol pen  

5.  Study your key terrain and observation and possible enemy avenues of approach with this raw TBATE look at your terrain.

6. Prepare to upgrade your TOPO map with alcohol pens--finest point possible with missing UTM/MGRS lines and/or landmark annotations. USGS
TOPO maps don't have all man-made details depicted because they change too often 

PHOTO RECON 

7. Go to google maps

TOP-VIEW

a. Find your home address and zoom in from 2000, 1000, 500, 200 and 20 feet Above Ground Level (AGL), SATELLITE VIEW. 

b. Screen capture this view and paste into your PAINT SHOP & save each as a file. 

c. Starting from your home at 2000 feet AGL, grab & shift your view to screen capture the biggest chunk you can several times until reaching your top HDZ limit at least 3, 000 meters out. Do the same towards your HDZ bottom limit. A good limiting feature would be a distinct west-east road.

SIDE STREET VIEW

d. Do the same as above but for SIDE street view all the way to your top/bottom HDZ limits. 

LEADER'S IN-PERSON RECON

8. After scrutinizing all of the above, get someone to drive you to recon in-person your HDZ. Have them stop so you can take notes and GPS cross-reference things you want to add to your TOPO map by alcohol pen. 

You can do the above without GPS if you don't have one. 

FUSION into INTELLigence

9. Armed with all of the above, go to power point.

10. Make a slide show using all your pics keeping them lumped together:

11. Add your in-person pics with the side view pics. 

12. In PPT annotate all the landmarks in your HDZ. 

If necessary go back to google maps and figure-out what is what. 

13. Go to word pad or microsoft word and make a log of all your HDZ key terrain features like below.

14. Go to copy place and color print your HDZ PPT presentation.and key terrain log

15. Place HDZ PPTs in top-load clear plastics in a 3-ring binder for instant reference
