A. If COMBAT: 

FIGHT Position

hold the back of the handle with your fingers away from the knuckle and FLICK the knife's opening assist tab to open the knife. 

Put your fingers into the knuckle guard holes. 

You can now stab, slash and punch your enemy in any combination your knife-fighting skills regimen calls for.

B. If RESCUE:

BREAK Configuration

1. Put your fingers into the knuckle guard holes aka GRAB and pound the point into safety glass to BREAK it out. 

CUT Position

2. TWIST the knife so it's wrist lanyard is taut and hold back of handle with your fingers to CUT seatbelts. 

Notice at any time you can let go of the BLACK DRAGON and it will not fall and be lost whether its in the middle of a melee fight or by a burning car. The retention lanyard addresses the REALITY that you might have to take some "hits" be it a blow from a drug thug or car's gas tank exploding and if you survive will be temporarily dazed and drop your combat/rescue tool unless its tethered to you beforehand in thoughtful situational humility.
