TactiSMART 021: Houston, We Have an Overly Fancy Weapons Handling Problem!
The Perils of Individual Shotgun Shell Loading into Tubular Magazines
USAF veteran, NUTNFANCY has done a lot of good work improving tactical excellence and we ought to thank him despite in this one shotgun video his over-50self constantly dropping the "d" word like he was some ignorant surfer beach bum hedonist (which he is not). MUTE his audio track.
ATI MB3R 4-Shot, Pump-Action Shot Gun in Stand-Alone Configuration
In his video below, he depicts atrocious stand-alone, 20mm/12 gauge shotgun weapons handling:
* Poor weapons handling finger dexterity wearing full finger covering, gloves
* Constant shirt-tail snagging endemic to 2-piece combat uniforms
* Poor shotgun firing technique: rack slide instantaneous with firing to reduce recoil to ZERO as done at API Jeff Cooper-style TTPE3
* Camouflage disruption ruin by brightly-colored shotgun shells

Fingertipless Gloves
Even thin Nomex flight gloves ruin the precise weapons handling finger dexterity needed to operate weapons at 100% efficiency. Watch NUTNFANCY fumble and drop 20mm/12 gauge shotgun shells under stress. Say what you want--"I can operate my weapons AOK wearing gloves"--you are a lying fool. Wear fingertip-less gloves which rappel-capable types are COTS available so you don't DIE in the firefight due to poor weapons handling. You don't see NFL QuarterBacks wearing gloves on their throwing hands, do you?
Look Ma, No Gloves! GOAT QBs Joe Montana & Steve Young
When you must have WARM hands and are not weapons firing--throw over an insulated glove over your fingertip-less, high-dexterity, weapons-handling, gloves. In the arctic, the U.S. ARMY has determined MITTENS where you squeeze the trigger in a blob of no-finger glove is the reason your AR15/M16/M4 trigger guard can swing down and way. Your weapons handling will suffer with the thumb & mitten blob.
In the Future, Everyone will Wear Jumpsuits
I keep waiting for all sexy females showing off their breasty curves in silver jumpsuits the sci-fi movies depict. Alas!
Aside from the sexy FORM of the jumpsuit, its FUNCTION is critical in combat operations. Why do you think top-of-the-pyramid-of-military-ego Special Mission Units (SMUs) wear jumpsuits? To just look different than BIG ARMY?
Watch NUTNFANCY try to surfer "D&^*%" through the loose shirt tails of his brown Army Combat Uniform (ACU).
You wouldn't have this problem if your 2-piece ACU attached by Velcro to the trousers making it into a defacto jumpsuit. When you need to go number #2 poopoo, you bend down the velcro flap which is your trouser top--from your Potomac Field Gear (PFG) combat shirt & detach for #2 latrine functions.
That Must Hurt!
Just watching the unskilled YOUTUBE shotgunners constantly fire pump-action shotguns without retracting their pump actions to negate recoil is cringe-city painful just to see. Obviously, before I graduated from the USMC Security Force Cadre Instructor Course copying the Cooper API TTPE3, I have fired shotguns taking their full recoil into my shoulder and noted unless one is Sado-Masochistic loving pain, this isn't going to catch on as a FUN activity! After learning how to pull back on the pump action so upon trigger release of the hammer, the slide instantly goes back negating recoil, I don't mind at all firing pump-action, shotguns. I'm actually personally detached and indifferent to it, because there IS NO RECOIL! Watch some properly-skilled U.S. military Mossberg 590 shooters fire with instant recoil dampening pump action.

Note: the CMORE M26 bolt-action, PREloaded Magazine-fed (and Dependent), mini-shotgun under U.S. ARMY M4 5.56mm carbines IS some progress towards lightening the Soldier's Load without creating a man without a rifle/carbine in his hand--however FELT RECOIL ON FIRING WILL BE FULLY FELT, FELTON! (I had to add another "F" word!)
The pump-action 20mm/12 gauge launcher CAN be mounted under the AR15/M16/M4 as the Knight Armament's "Master Key" with the Remington 870 proved--which can be recoil-dampened by shooter slide action technique. It can be even done inexpensively (under $200) as we detailed in our earlier TactiSMART 012 article using female-to-female Picatinny rails and the evil CHICOM ATI MB3R, 4-shot shotgun creating an Assault Rifle/Assault ShotGun (AR/ASG) combo.

A 20mm/12 Gauge Shell in Proper Color Beats a Dozen on your LBE Giving Your Presence Away
Attention-to-detail is a virtue the USMIL touts--but often fails to live by. Ponder all the BLACK hand weapons out there ruining the good Multi-Cam (MC) camouflage progress we've made. Cover them up with McNett/GEARID MC CamoForm tape, please!
For training, use BRIGHT BLUE for your DIY home-made, non-firing, dummy shells made using a 0.75 wooden dowel and a hack saw. Alternatively, here's a source for dummy 12 gauge shells in clear plastic marked "DUMMY":

As stated in TactiSMART 012, the Shot Shell Card (SSC) is the fastest way to differentiate between 20mm/12-gauge types. The MB3R can at the most soft Velcro-hold 4x shells on the left of its receiver, and 3x on the right aft of the ejection port. The most affordable, $9, 4/3 shot card purchase is to buy the Midway 7 rounder and cut it into a 4 and 3-round shot card; have a seamstress re-attach the elastic on the card that needs it.

If you are willing to pay more, there are colored shot cards that can hold a TYPE of shell for you to differentiate from.
Camouflaging Exposed Shotgun Shells on Loops
When buying firing 20mm/12 gauge shells, CHECK THEIR PLASTIC COLOR. At the very least, buy the dark black ones. An even better solution would be to cover the end of elastic ends of a shotcard with another piece of material leaving only the brass ends uncovered so you can grab them.
These brass ends could be brass-blackened with Birchwood-Casey Brass Black:

QUESTION: Can you spray-paint your 20mm/12 gauge firing shells and fire them safely?
I don't see why not--considering these inquisitive fellows fired a .50 caliber shells--through shotguns safely without any barrel damage:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUbMPYUFr94
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjkHK3JWHdM&t=702s
In fact, I'd like to know what range/accuracy could be achieved firing .50 cal shells through a smooth and a rifled-bore shotgun in light of the suicide car/truck bomb threat the USMIL faces--yet refuses to equip our 9-man rifle squads with a lightweight under 15-pound .50 cal rifle (like the DESERT TECH HTI bullpup or SERBU BFG-50 or RN-50) firing High Explosive (HE) Raufoss rounds to explode them from safe stand-offs...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EIeUsKpgy0M
The WW2 Soviet Russian Army defense was built around their effective Anti-Tank Rifles punching through thin tank sides and the myriad of unarmored, fuel/ammo-laden support trucks following in the latter's wake. Has this flammable and flimsy "tail" gone away today--or gotten worse with entire main bodies equipped with high ground-pressure, air-filled rubber tired, road/trail-bound, wheeled truck death traps?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qkMn62vv50
Tracer .50 cal/20mm/12 gauge combo might pre-detonate a suicide car/truck bomb--but at an UNSAFE 100 meters. Ugggh. Tracer 12-gauge rounds cannot be loaded into a shotgun's tubular magazine necessitating they be carried on shot cards for identification and single-round direct loading into the chamber.

You have to see this round to appreciate it. A real live .50BMG / M17 Tracer round that has two Sabot sleeves so it comes straight out the end of the barrel. It lights just as soon as it exits the barrel and burns a good, 3-4 seconds. This round has a 400 meter tracer burnout, but you have to aim 30 feet above the target at that range. Many of our customers use this round for a remote starter for bonfires at 100 yards. This round hits a 10" steel plate at 60 yards and a rifled barrel throws 8" patters at 100 yards all day long.
DO NOT USE THIS ROUND IN A TUBULAR MAGAZINE! DO NOT USE THIS ROUND WITH A CHOKE IN YOUR BARREL!
Use caution around dry grass, foliage, trees, and flammable materials.

To differentiate shotgun shell types by color, lightly Krylon spray paint your 20mm/12 gauge shells that will be exposed on your shotgun cards; TAN for 00 buck; LIGHT GREEN for slugs; LIGHT BROWN for bird shot; DARK GREEN for CS/OC powders; Tracer, leave in original plastic color; Anti-Drones, Colored Flares for specific recognition etc.
Look Ma, I'm UPSIDE DOWN!
One right thing depicted in NUTNFANCY's video is the shells were carried in receiver side loops UPSIDE DOWN so when you invert your shotgun to reload its tubular magazine, you are actually pulling them UP & OUT of their loops.
I don't have a 12-gauge .22LR Adapter yet to ascertain if it can securely hold a .22LR round inside it if the whole things is upside-down--or not.
What's the Best Way to Camouflage Cover/Carry/Speed Re-Load Shotgun Shells without PRELM Dependency?
As presented before in our initial AR/ASG TactiSMART 012 article, you can carry 22x number of loose 12-gauge shells in a typical AR15/M16/M4 MOLLE/PALS pouch.

With the loose rounds carry option, you reach into the pouch and load 1-at-a-time into your shotgun's chamber, invert it and load its tube or refill your empty elastic shot cards on the left/right side of your ASG or stand-alone SG. Slow, but K.I.S.S. minimalist.
PRELMs are faster, but if you live by PRELMs, you can die by PRELMs--because your PRELMD shotgun is now requiring them for multiple shots since there no longer is a built-in tubular magazine in the gun. YES, you can single-load a shotgun shell into a PRELMD shotgun with no box magazine because you dropped all of them looking Hollywood John WickSTUPID aka TactiKOOL. If you keep at least 1 magazine in your shotgun viewing it as a semi-permanent fixture to the gun, reloading is temporarily removing it and loading single shells into it, then returning it into the gun versus loading those same single shells directly into the fixed tube. There are MORE STEPS AND TIME required to pre-load a magazine that you have to detach & re-attach to the gun than just loading rounds directly into a gun. DUHH. Too much to comprehend by 20-something normies who think the Earth is flat and what happened in the past can't be accurately remembered and recorded? "OK, fucktard".
The other option is to carry reload 12-gauge shells in hard Velcro-backed shot cards--you can probably squeeze in 2 x long (4 to 7-round) shot cards in an AR15/M16/M4 MOLLE/PALS pouch for 14 ready rounds that you swap-out empty shot cards on your ASG/SG's sides for pre-loaded shotcards. PRE-LOAD SOP aka TTPE3 would be RIP-STICK-PULL-STICK.
12-GAUGE ASG/SG SHOT CARD PRE-LOAD SOP/TTPE3
Jumpsuit with 4" x 9" Soft Velcro for SSCs
RIP: remove empty shot card from side of your ASG/SG.
Large 7-Round SSC
STICK: empty shotcard on a 4" x 12" soft piece of Velcro sewn onto the sides of your TacPants or ACU or jumpsuit's trousers. Lefties would have retention soft Velcro on their right trouser sides for their non-firing hand to place empty shot cards there. Righties would have retention soft Velcro on their left leg's side. Soft Velcro can tolerate getting somewhat dirty and still function--hard "hook" Velcro cannot work if too dirty.
SSC Attached!
PULL: remove new, loaded shot card from its pouch
STICK: stick new loaded shotcard onto left or right side of your ASG/SG.
****
At this point, your ASG/SG is PRE-loaded. You still have to withdraw 1 shotgun shell-at-a-time from the shot cards and then into the ASG/SG's chamber or invert it and tube-load several shells in. There is a time cost paid-for upfront to swap-out empty for pre-loaded shot cards, that if the tactical situation allows it, speeds actual ASG/SG reloading because of the shorter distance going from the gun-mounted shot card than fishing loose shells from a pouch on your Load Bearing Equipment (LBE). The pay-off is you can visually see/control what TYPE of shotgun shells you load/fire with shot cards which themselves can be color-coded or size-coded to mean say TACTICAL or SPECIALTY that you cannot achieve by loose rounds in a mag pouch. If all you are going to shoot is TACTICAL "00" buck shot, then a mag pouch you know that is loaded only with just that type (22x or 25x) makes TactiSENSE.
There are several MOLLE/PALS 12-gauge shotgun pouches that break-open to access shells held by elastics--essentially a shot card fixed to your LBE. Longer shell/gun separation distance than the shot card on your ASG/SG--but no fishing for a loose round in a pouch albeit you will be hard-pressed to differentiate what shell-does-what under stress in a firefight.

OBSERVATIONS
8" x 4" x 1.5"
The IronSeals pouch is highly interesting in that it can carry 25 x 20mm/12 gauge shells individually in elastic loops via break-open.
However, for the absolute maximum bang-for-buck of just $10 to $15, the BEST 12-gauge shotgun pouch we've found so far is one that holds 16x shells; 4 static outside the pouch and inside in Velcro shot cards of 6 and 6. You can cut the 2x 6ers into 4x 3ers for attaching to a MB3R size-limited to a 4er on the left and a 3er shot card on the receiver's right.
The "camo" pouch version offered is a generic MC clone.

OBSERVATIONS
THE WINNER!
----4-round "makes them SORE" pain shot cards = NON-LETHAL shot shells with rubber balls
---3-rounds are "deadLEE" shot cards = LETHAL shot shells with say 00 Buck
So if you feel 4 its make them SORE, aka NON-LETHAL. If you feel 3, its deadLEE, aka LETHAL.
One of the downsides of PRELMD shotguns is differentiating between specialty ammo can only be done with the minimal 5-round box magazine instead of individual rounds in elastic loops on shot cards which can be as small as 3. The 5-round magazine can be spray-paint colored and black permanent marker, Sharpie-marked to say "SLUGS" or "ANTI-DRONE" or "FLARES" etc. to help identify them. You'll then have to remove the currently-loaded magazine with say 00 buck and clear the chamber or action of the last shell to insert the new specialty ammo type. It's a problem Soldiers have coped with in the past to get Rifle Grenade-firing blanks into the chamber--sometimes with unhappy results--such that today's RGs use live bullets to launch them so this swap-out in combat isn't needed.
There is also nothing stopping G.I. Joes from adding soft Velcro to the side of your bolt-action, CMORE M26 PRELMD shotgun to shot card hold, individual specialty shells. If instead your PRELMD SG is manually pump-action operated, when the time comes to switch to select slug, you don't activate the slide so as to prevent loading a new 00 buck round into the chamber. REMOVE the magazine, and hand-load your slug into the chamber. If you're confident 1x slug will do the job, you can re-insert your mag with 00 buck back into the action before slugging out the door knob bolt.
Room for 6x 3x Round SSCs
Whether you are shot card re-loading-centric or just use them to hold specialty rounds, you'll want to RETAIN them when empty. Sewing or fabric-gluing a 4" wide and 9 to 12" long soft Velcro rectangle onto your TacPants or ACU trousers or jumpsuits' side enables you to slap empty shot cards there aka STICK in our TTPE3 we discussed above.
