TactiSMART 017: Showers? We Don't Need No Stinkin' Showers?

Yes, you do--or you'll be a stinkin' person!

One of THE BEST--it's hard to decide since there are several--scenes in the 2006 "Casino Royale" is when Daniel Craig's 007 joins Eva Green's Vesper in the hotel shower and holds her like a totally decent gentlemen and turns warmer water on them to comfort her after the horrific machete fight with the black terrorists. Easy-to-do in a 5 Star hotel!

Heating water to just 10 degrees above your body's 98.6F for a warm shower IS a daunting energy task if off-the-power grid. During the COVID19 panic-demic, your stay-at-home time is a great opportunity to get your house into SHTF order. Let's tackle the warm/hot shower situation.

There is the sun-baked shower plastic bag & hose that can work great IN THE SUMMER SUN if you are OUTDOORS. You (James Bond Citizen aka JBC or G.I. Joe) can erect a shower curtain around it to include your Sprinter Van Mobile Home (SVMH) or M113 Gavin light tracked, tank--if that's your home on-wheels/tracks--but let's face it--we'd all rather take our showers INDOORS so the PLAN B, WAR track or HOME DEFENSE (HD), BUG-OUT VAN should have this built-in with a commode--adequately powered by enough roof solar panels for hot water.

Every American should have a SVMH as their SHTF PLAN B in case they absolutely must bug-out away from an incoming destructive force; paid for by their 2 years of National Service (NS). Every American with his/her own self-propelled, covered wagon. History repeats--again! The Veteran Administration (VA) should begin this as the new American norm by supplying them to responsible veterans so they can get on-their-feet and if necessary drive to where seasonal work may be--say Amazon shipping out west etc. SVMH adventure across America seeing our parks is what wise President of the United States (POTUS) Teddy Roosevelt intended so we can "find ourselves"--just make sure you are not alone, are gun-armed and have an Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) if you encounter the evil supernatural/BIGFOOTS etc. out there...

PLAN A should be your static, permanent home for "bug-out-in-place" aka HD simply because you can have far more supplies stored than you could ever transport in 1 trip by any vehicle. Band together with your neighbors to guard your street as a HOME DEFENSE FORCE (HDF). You would ideally want to shower in your home's Bathtub/Shower/Curtain (BSC) combination where you already have a shower head holder on the wall for hands-free showering as you do in Every Day Carry (EDC), ehh Life. (EDL). There are levels of SHTF polite societal collapse. The 1st thing to do in SHTF is to fully fill your bath tub up with cold water which can be purified for drinking or used as-is for hygiene. Do this even if the water grid is still up.

SHOCKING. Simply NOT SHOCKING!

The 2nd possibility is your natural gas runs out--but you still have the electrical power grid.

In this situation, you can heat up water to 100ish degrees on your electric stovetop to shuttle to a 5-gallon bucket in your BSC combo, where an electrically-Powered Shower Hose (ePSH) that recharges by 5-volt USB awaits. 5v is easily solar or hand-crank recharged. Tedious, but do-able.

Remember the beginning teaser's ending in "Goldfinger"?

Hahahaha.

The electrical heating appliance below is designed to go into a tub of water and is SAFE. An even better way than heating an entire bathrub of water or shuttling hot water from your stove is to get this $12 water element heater and warm a 5 GALLON BUCKET of cold water in your BSC combo; just 1 step/time to finger-comfy warmth or thermometer-measured 100-110F, then shower 'til finished. FINIS.

Down! Down! the Wicked Electrical Grid is DOWN....

Another bad movie-derived pun.

With no 110v grid power going into your home, you can still take COLD showers--this might be enough for a lot of REALLY TOUGH, STOICAL people!

However, if you are like Commander Fleming's Bond and myself, you'll want an at least warm--if not hot--shower before going on COLD. You have a 110v heating element that just needs--you guessed it--110 volts of electricity. Your car--perhaps a Yaris-Martin with TRUNK 'N BUNK aft sleeping area---should have an inverter to convert its propulsion system's 12v to 110v to heat up a 5-gallon bucket of cold water to hot using the car's gas-powered engine on for less than 5 minutes.

007 TRUNK 'N Bunk

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQDvncqxX7E

During this time, you can also be recharging your laptop computer that also needs the 110v help before being reduced to whatever weird voltage it needs--usually 11.1v--unfortunately more than the easy 5v. Even if the power grid is down, the large screen laptop can do far more things than your tiny selfphonecam--like having a keyboard to make internal HD documents--like what devices you have needing what type batteries etc. Your HOME DEFENSE (HD) SOP might be once-a-week, cranking your car engine to recharge devices that need the 110v boost, heating up a bucket of hot water for an indoor ePSH shower in your BSC combo.

We are Close...

HOME DEFENSIVE technology should be seen as a "work-in-progress" getting closer and closer to HEALTHY off-grid independence. For WAR, the USMIL has still yet to admit that human beings need a commode and hot showers to fight at 100% efficiency built into every tracked, armored tank aka WAR WAGON so CAVALRY, DRAGOONS and MECHANDOs can fight 24/7 non-stop to combat overmatch foes with OPTEMPO.

Without a TBATE destructive force destroying your above-ground static home, the SPECTRE of evil humans refusing to live decently is the TBAM crisis of polite society infrastructure suddenly becoming un-available--the COVID19 is actually a mild dress rehearsal for a severe STHF mess. One needs organized society for water, food and electricity--in that order--if the JBC has shelter covered (pun intended). You can collect/store enough H2O to live off-the-water-grid indefinitely with adequate rainfall or a below-ground well. You can live without societal-supplied, store-distributed food if you farm your own and can small game hunt--consider the opening moves of the "Wolverines" partisan group in the John Milius original, "Red Dawn" in 1982. Being able to shoot a deer and live off its delicious meat just about sustains everyone--and American rednecks know this.

Will you be happy?

LOL. No you will not! Consider what the Wolverines did when the RICE CRISPIES cereal boxes fell out the back of a truck convoy they just ambushed. SUGAR!! YUMM!

MRE Steve's YOUTUBE channel details all the world's MREs--his recent reveal of the Taiwanese Army ration composing of crackers with chocolate syrup 3x a day is just short of horrific.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9WdP-9Q2JI

Just go to WalMart and buy as many canned foods as you can, when you can--for SHTF preparation (prep). Their Great Value BEEF STEW tastes better with less chemicals than the more expensive name brands and one small can fills you for a day.

James Bond is REAL.

Re: what is the life span of a rechargeable battery

What mileage do you get in your car?  Just saying "it depends".

Normal use the original Dell battery should last 18-24 months.  As it dies, it can hold less of a charge which I suspect is what happened to yours.

If you're going to get a new battery, consider where you buy it.  Avoid E-Bay and try to get an original Dell battery.  It should be 53Whr.

Re: what is the life span of a rechargeable battery

My brother has a similar problem only with his, as soon as you unplug it it turns off.  Batteries can also lose life as a result of being charged for too long,  My brother left his plugged in for days, and that's what killed it, you should try to run the battery out completely before recharging it.  Doing this has actually given me more battery life.

Re: what is the life span of a rechargeable battery

Circuitry within the notebook's Lithium Ion battery module prevents over-charging, so it shouldn't be an issue.

Depleting the battery fully before re-charging is also not applicable to Lithium Ion notebook batteries. Save that advice for the cordless power tool forum.

Re: what is the life span of a rechargeable battery

Lithium Ion batteries can usually be charged 300 to 500 times [charge-discharge cycles] ... after that usually some cells in the battery start failing and the battery slowly dies ...
